Things to do in Sarajevo and central Bosnia

Sarajevo sits beyond Herzegovina's white karst, in a greener, forested valley that feels like a different country from Mostar's dry limestone. The train from Mostar runs twice a day year-round, a journey of roughly two hours, though timetables shift with the season, so check with the operator, ZFBH, before you fix a date. Buses cover the same route more often and at more flexible hours.

Once in Sarajevo, the old Ottoman quarter of Bascarsija, the Latin Bridge where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, and the 1984 Winter Olympics venues sit within easy walking distance of each other. Winters here bring proper snow to the surrounding mountains, unlike the near-snowless lowlands around Mostar and Medjugorje, and skiing on Bjelasnica or Jahorina draws visitors from November into March.
