Things to do in Medjugorje

Medjugorje has drawn Catholic pilgrims since 1981, when local parishioners first reported Marian apparitions in this Herzegovina village about 25 kilometres southwest of Mostar (a drive of roughly 30 to 40 minutes). The Vatican has never ruled on whether the apparitions themselves are supernatural.

What it has done is narrower: in May 2019 Pope Francis authorised official pilgrimages here, and on 19 September 2024 the Vatican's doctrine office issued a nihil obstat recognising the sanctuary's "abundant spiritual fruits" and encouraging its pastoral role, without pronouncing on the phenomenon itself.

In practice that means Mass at St James Church, climbs up Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain over sharp limestone in a climate that pushes past 30 degrees in July and August, and a village economy built almost entirely around pilgrim visits.
